Google’s AI summaries just landed it in hot water — Rolling Stone’s parent company, Penske Media, is suing the tech giant for allegedly stealing content and killing clicks.
Penske Media, which also owns Billboard and Variety, says Google is strong-arming publishers into handing over content for its AI Overviews — a move they call “monopoly bullying.” The result? Fewer clicks, less cash, and very angry media bosses.
Google, naturally, clapped back, calling the claims “meritless” and insisting its AI makes search “more helpful.” Translation: “Don’t hate the bot, hate the game.”
But Penske isn’t buying it. They say Google’s AI empire is cannibalizing journalism itself, leaving publishers with two choices: feed the machine or disappear from search. Welcome to the new digital Hunger Games.
